Homemaker Ella Casey is circling the middle-age drain. Her once adventurous life is now measured in loads of laundry, her grand dreams of changing the world diluted with each rinse cycle. When she flies to the enchanting California estate of her best friend Teri for a Peace Corps reunion, the accomplishments of her peers threaten to soak up the last drops of Ella’s floundering self-esteem.
Teri Flores is everything Ella is not glamorous, wealthy, and fearless. Her sprawling mansion, La Casa Del Alma, serves as both artists’ retreat and modern day salon to Teri’s eclectic entourage. Teri entertains her guests with lavish meals, outrageous activities, and impassioned debates, but the weekend sours when old grievances mix with new ambitions.
As past and present collide, Ella struggles to redefine herself, but will her growing need to validate her life end up destroying it?
THE HOUSE OF THE SOUL is a spiritual journey of love, loss, and friendship, and a treasure map for anyone brave enough to embark on the precarious voyage of self-discovery.

The House of the Soul is a captivating story about a woman’s struggle to find fulfillment. Ella had once felt as if she was making a difference in the world. She thought that being a wife and mother would have been enough for her, but it wasn’t. Although she loved David, their two boys and even their fixer-upper home in New Zealand, she was restless.Ella missed her best friend Teri and the life that they once shared while in the Peace Corps. She longed for the gratifying feeling of changing lives. So when Teri invited her to a reunion at her home in California, Ella was elated. Tara was surprised though to find that David had already packed her bags.
Once Ella reached the states, the book filled with drama. Although Ella was catching up with friends and enjoying herself, she couldn’t rid her mind of the sleepy woman’s voice she heard when she rang David. Feeling insecure and as if she didn’t measure up, Ella was tempted when an actor began to flirt with her. But what really had Ella questioning her commitment to her family, was when Robert Blakeman, offered her a job traveling with him, and she said yes.
My favorite characters in this book were Teri and Sachi. They both suffered huge losses, but instead of wallowing in self-pity, they used their energy to help others. Teri opened her home to aspiring artists from all over the world, and Sachi sprinkled words of wisdom and love everywhere she went. I found the inspirational messages in this book amazing. Although I had unanswered questions at the end of the book, and didn’t find Tara’s relationship with her husband to be even a little bit realistic, I still found the novel enjoyable and entertaining.

The House of the Soul A Novel Annie Dawson 9781533314147 Books Reviews
Ok, friends, this book was SO GOOD that I'm seriously embarrassed it took me so long to review. I read this book almost all in one night, while I held my newborn on the couch because it's the only way she'd sleep...I would have finished it all that night but my died around 3am and I was forced to watch TV instead. That child is now 18 months old... so, it's been a LONG TIME. But anyway - the book!
This book was EXCELLENT. Part of the book synopsis says, "THE HOUSE OF THE SOUL is a journey of love, loss, and friendship, and a treasure map for anyone brave enough to embark on the precarious voyage of self-discovery." And it's true -- but it spoke to me most because the central character is a mother. The book follows Ella as she struggles to figure out if there's "more" to her than "Mom," and how to reconcile her past (educated, photographer, Peace Corps volunteer) with her current life (stay-at-home-mom of two). I think any woman who has struggled with motherhood and personal identity will identify with Ella's struggle.
We follow Ella as she struggles with friendships, her marriage, and herself and ultimately see that it's only Ella who has lost her ability to see all the varied parts of herself. Her true friends and her husband know and recognize Ella for the woman she was, is, and will continue to be.
I identified David (her husband) with my husband for the care and love he shows Ella both in allowing her to explore her own insecurities and struggles and in the support he shows for her as a person.
Beyond the sort of heavy life themes, the book appears to be semi-autobiographical and gives us some insights into life as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ghana, which is super interesting!
Overall, fantastic book - well-worth a read, particularly for women in the throes of the self-evolution that comes with parenting!
Five stars!
(Sorry, I forgot to mention I received this book for free in exchange for an honest--though very belated--review. Thank you!)
NICE
I loved the message of living your life with purpose and trying to make your corner of the world better for others. This is a strong debut novel. I hope there will be more! Melanie Brach
It never takes me long to read a book, but I wanted to savor this one. Ella, Teri, Laura, Ethan. Sachi, they were all such important people as I read this book. I got caught up with Ella's search and learned as she learned. Sachi and Teri and their calm love was overpowering. I wanted to cry at the end, of course he sent the flowers. He loves her.
This novel was a treat to read each night this week once all the kids fell asleep and the house was still. It is an escape into fiction with interesting characters and adventures, while also bringing back memories of my own travels and adventures before motherhood and family life. I found a confirmation to love my current stage in life. Also, I am sad the characters have finished their stories and the book is over, which is exactly how a good fiction novel should end.
